A social enterprise is an organization or venture (within an organization) that advances a social mission through market-based strategies. These strategies include receiving earned income in direct exchange for a product, service, or privilege. Social enterprises can come in both nonprofit and for-profit varieties.
The environment, with manifest social problems (poverty, educational deficits, hunger, homelessness, low employment) and the way a given nonprofit organization translates its mission by prioritizing work, determines which ventures will be chosen. SC Uplift is exploring healthcare provider social enterprise and small business incubators.
